Magic of Hong Kong
Hong Kong was one of the first cities I dreamed of visiting as a teenager. In the late ’80s, Canto-pop, TV dramas, and action-packed films were the cultural equivalent of today’s K-pop phenomenon. Hong Kong also became my home for six years, encompassing the period before, during, and after the 1997 handover. Even after returning to Singapore, my professional endeavors frequently brought me back to this dynamic city.
Here are 5 must-do activities to immerse yourself in the vibrant essence of Hong Kong:

1. Ascend Victoria Peak via Peak Tram
Experience unparalleled panoramic views of Hong Kong’s iconic skyline from The Peak. The historic Peak Tram offers a nostalgic journey to the summit, where you can dine at various restaurants while soaking in the scenery.
Tip: Visit during sunset to witness the city transition from day to night in a breathtaking display.
2. Cross Victoria Harbour on the Star Ferry
This historic ferry ride between Central and Tsim Sha Tsui provides one of the most scenic and affordable ways to appreciate Hong Kong’s skyline, especially during sunset or on clear days.
Personal Note: For four years, the Star Ferry was my daily commute, offering a serene start and end to each workday.
3. Traverse Hong Kong Island on the Ding Ding Tram
Hop on the iconic double-decker tram, affectionately known as the “Ding Ding,” for a leisurely ride across Hong Kong Island. From the traditional dried goods stores in Kennedy Town to the bustling shopping districts of Causeway Bay and the local markets in North Point, this journey offers a window into the city’s diverse neighborhoods.
Tip: Sit on the upper deck for the best views and photo opportunities.
4. Ride the Central–Mid-Levels Escalator
Explore the world’s longest outdoor covered escalator system, which connects Central to the Mid-Levels. As you ascend, discover hidden cafés, bustling markets, and historic streets—perfect for a leisurely urban adventure.
Personal Note: Living near the escalator on Robinson Road, I spent many weekends exploring the vibrant neighborhoods along its path.
5. Dive into the Bustling Streets of Mongkok
Experience the energetic street life of Ladies’ Market and Temple Street Night Market. These bazaars offer everything from fashion items to electronics.
Tip: Bargaining is expected!
For Repeat Visitors:
- Explore Lantau Island:
Visit the Tian Tan Buddha (Big Buddha) and Po Lin Monastery for a serene escape from the city’s hustle. - Hike Dragon’s Back:
One of Hong Kong’s most popular trails, offering breathtaking coastal views. Conclude your hike at Big Wave Bay Beach for a refreshing swim. - Visit M+ Museum in West Kowloon:
M+ is Hong Kong’s groundbreaking museum of visual culture, showcasing contemporary art, design, architecture, and moving images from Asia and beyond. With its striking architecture and immersive exhibitions, it’s a must-visit for art enthusiasts exploring the city’s creative side. Don’t miss the rooftop terrace for stunning harbor views.
Dining Etiquette Tips:
1. Never Stick Chopsticks Upright in Rice:
Rice: This resembles incense offerings at funerals and is considered very bad luck. Instead, lay them across the plate or on a chopstick rest.
2. Tea Pouring Etiquette:
If someone pours tea for you, tap two fingers on the table as a silent thank-you gesture. When dining with others, always offer to fill their cups before your own.
3. Sharing Dishes is the Norm:
In traditional Cantonese restaurants, food is served family-style. Use communal serving utensils if provided, or the opposite end of your chopsticks to serve yourself.
4. Don’t Flip a Fish:
When eating a whole fish, never flip it over, as it symbolizes a boat capsizing—a bad omen for fishermen and travelers. Instead, remove the bones to access the bottom layer.
Hong Kong seamlessly blends tradition and modernity, offering a plethora of experiences that captivate both first-time visitors and seasoned travelers. Whether you’re exploring its bustling streets, savoring its culinary delights, or immersing yourself in its rich culture, the city promises unforgettable memories.
